Support/Advice Workers - Practical Support

Practical support

This section brings together information about a range of available financial and practical support, and links to other relevant websites (and other pages of this website).

Some schemes and resources are dependent on tenure; some have qualifying criteria such as income or age, while others are available to all.

If you have suggestions about new or additional schemes and information that would be useful to other support workers or advisors, and could be added to this section, please let us know.

Help with furniture

There are a number of options available to help new tenants furnish their home. These include:

  • Community Care Grant or Loan Community Care Grants and Budgeting Loans may be available for individuals who are in receipt of certain benefits.
  • Furniture Schemes
Track2000 and the The Salvation Army operate furniture schemes in Cardiff, recycling unwanted furniture either free of charge or at low cost.
  • Websites
Freecycle is a 'not for profit' website which enables people to advertise and pass on unwanted items to others who need them. All items are available free of charge and the website also offers the opportunity for individuals to post 'wanted' advertisements for items that they need.

Money Advice, Debt and Grants

Other sections of this website bring together information for the general public about money and debt issues, energy efficiency and associated grants, and home improvements with details of help available depending on tenure. View these sections for information that may be helpful for you in your role.

Debt Management Toolkit

Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Council coordinated a Debt Management Course in 2013/14 which was delivered by the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). This is a useful tool for frontline workers who are working with service users experiencing budgeting and/or debt issues.  The toolkit has been designed for support workers with the aim of assisting and allowing service users to take control of their finances and discover ways to address their debt issues.
