Right To Buy

Suspension of the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire in Cardiff

Due to the very high level of housing need in the city and the shortage of affordable housing, Cardiff Council applied to the Welsh Government to suspend the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire in all areas of Cardiff for a period of 5 years.

On 19th July 2017 the Welsh Government agreed to this request. As a result of this decision, council and housing association tenants will no longer have the right to apply to purchase their homes for a period of 5 years from 19th July 2017 until 18th July 2022.

No further applications for Right to Buy or Right to Acquire will be processed until 19th July 2022.

The council runs an Assisted Home Ownership scheme which enables first time buyers to purchase a home. This is open to everyone who lives or works in Cardiff, not just council or housing association tenants.  Under this scheme the Council retains a percentage of the property, however, no rent is paid.
